Back in May I published a guide to setting up Claude Team for a law firm. It covered every admin setting, what each one does, and whether I’d turn it on. Anthropic has changed that console so much since then that the guide fell out of date, and so did a good chunk of Anthropic’s own help articles. So I went through the live admin screens one setting at a time and rebuilt the guide from scratch. A lot of firms are also on ChatGPT so I also wrote a companion guide for ChatGPT Business in the same format.
If you set up Claude Team from the May edition, a few things have changed under you. The agent features now start switched on, including Cowork, Claude in Chrome, and automatic approval of tool actions. Memory is on by default, and if you turn it off later, it deletes everyone’s memory. Two ways to share work outside the firm are on by default. The Microsoft 365 connector can now send email, set inbox rules, and edit SharePoint files. The guide opens with a short list of what to revisit, and each item links to the step that covers it.
The ChatGPT Business guide has surprises of its own. In a shared project, every member can read every conversation and download every file. The firm can’t turn memory off for everyone, because that switch is locked to Enterprise. That makes project-only memory your main wall between matters. There’s no data export, no compliance API, and no audit log of conversations. And every app in OpenAI’s directory starts enabled, thousands of them.
Both guides open with a table of every setting and my call on each one. They also cover what to tell clients under ABA Formal Opinion 512, how to pilot the tool and confirm your restrictions actually hold, and checklists for when someone leaves the firm or something goes wrong. They’re long because the settings matter. If your firm runs either tool, or is about to, set aside an hour and go through the right guide with whoever handles your IT.
